Extractions

Certain dental issues can be so severe that a tooth extraction is the best way to treat them. During this procedure, your dentist will remove a tooth or several teeth damaged beyond repair. The more you learn about extractions, the easier it will be to prepare for one.

Why Do People Get Teeth Extracted?

There are many reasons why people would need to get a tooth extracted. Typically, irreversible damage pain without a known cause are reasons for people to get a tooth pulled. Other examples include:

  • Wisdom teeth removal
  • Tooth trauma or damage
  • Periodontal disease
  • Severely decayed teeth
  • Overcrowded teeth
  • Impacted teeth

Simple Extraction

During a simple tooth extraction, your dentist will pull the tooth visible from the mouth. You’ll be under general anesthesia, and they’ll use special tools during the procedure. Elevators are used to loosen the tooth, and dental forceps are used to extract it.

Surgical Extraction

A surgical extraction requires pulling the tooth from the bone. Your oral surgeon will make a small incision in your gums and may need to either remove the bone around the affected tooth or cut the actual tooth before removing it. You might need a surgical extraction if you have a disease that spread to and affected a bone.
